Volunteer Assistant: Fall 2024 – Spring 2025
BMC was founded in 2008 by Michael Larsen to allow a few local elementary students the opportunity to come listen to math talks and do some problem solving. This was then revived by Larsen and Ayelet Lindenstrauss as a larger outreach activity of the IU Mathematics Department. The goal is to give students from 3rd to 6th grade a weekly inquiry-based learning experience with mathematics they would not encounter in a K-12 curriculum. An example of an activity would be having students make paper snowflakes using n-folds and find number of symmetries, and then making a Cayley table for their snowflakes.
Sprouts Bloomington Math Circle (SBMC):
Co-founder and Organizer: Fall 2025 – Present
SBMC is a program founded alongside Julia Plavnik, intended to target students who are younger than those that normally attend BMC. We meet less often (once a month) and partition students based off grade level (pre-K and K, 1st, and 2nd grade). Overall, the mission is aligned with BMC in providing engaging mathematics to a young audience.
